Do You Know This Woman?

Last Sunday, I was up in Galway for the opening of the Galway Arts Festival! It took the form of a huge parade called the Macnas, which was the best parade I have ever seen. Forget St Patrick's Day, you need to see the Macnas. I have videos of it if anyone wants me to post them? Anyway, after the Macnas was over the various street performers that Galway is famous for came back on to the street and started performing again. One of the street performers was this woman:

She's quite clever, playing on people's curiosities! Isn't her costume and her manner beautiful? Anyway, I went up to get my slip of paper, and she took a long time deciding mine, but she eventually gave me this:

Cool or what?! Can you see the handwriting? I wonder what she wrote it with... Nice, isn't it?

2010 - The Summer Of Being Professional, Arty, And Bloggery.

It may seem from the Things I Really Must Do Over The Summer post last month (and the one I'll probably do in a few days, seeing as July is almost over...) that I haven't been doing much this summer. Well actually... I have. And no, I don't mean just blogging. I am now an art critic!

Yeah, I didn't expect it either.

The Kilkenny Arts Festival is starting in two weeks time. The Butler Gallery in Kilkenny has started a Young Critics group for young people. We're getting back-stage passes to all the exhibitions in the festival, we get to interview almost everybody involved, curators, artists, exhibitors etc, and then we get to acclaim or condemn them in different ways, like on a blog we set up yesterday, podcasts, videos, screaming at people on the street... we came with some really extreme methods. It was awesome. And we get free food too! And the food is really good!

These past two weeks (this week and last week) we have attended workshops on different art techniques - animation, stencilling, photography, painting and sculpting - to get a feel for artists' techniques and we have set up a blog for those of us who want to critique there. We've come up with a better name for us than Kilkenny Young Critics and we've got a manifesto, we're in the process of choosing our theme tune! Oh, and the name of our group is...

The Red Square Kibosh!

The red square bit is the logo of the Butler Gallery, and kibosh means to put an end to. So this summer, I will be writing on three blogs: The Red Square Kibosh, PunchTheSphinx and here at Musings! You'll never be rid of me! NEVER!

Music at Musings - Alan Pownell: Life Worth Living

This Music at Musings is a short one. Remember when I used to do those? Anyway, this is iTunes' Single of the Week, which means it's absolutely free. Good thing to, because it's a brilliant song. It'll make anyone cheer up! And it's free!

WTF? Teen Vogue's Best Dressed Reader of the Day

On the Teen Vogue website, they have a Best Dressed Reader of the Day contest where they declare a reader the best dressed reader of the day. None of them had ever stood out for me, until today:

I really like the skirt, the beanie, and the Tom and Jerry t-shirt and I thought the expression on the girl's face was lovely. And she didn't look straight at the camera like a lot of them did. But at time of print, there were four comments, and they went like this:

'Yikes!!!!! Hideous!!'

'random blog link by some idiot spamming Teen Vogue'

'ew I don't like it'

'sorry, but I don't think this is how a fourteen year old girl should dress up...'

I am fully aware that people have different opinions. I have opinions too, in case you haven't noticed. But I don't see how this is so hideous. And why is this so inappropriate for a fourteen year old girl? A beanie, a Tom and Jerry t-shirt and denim flats? Sometimes I really don't understand people's minds.

In other news, I have purchased a new pair of (Product) Red Converse. I think they are very nice. Will upload picture soon. That is all.

Baby Elephants Are Nature's Quadbikes!

Some of you might have noticed that I keep talking about something called PTS. This is my explanation. (Bear with me, it's quite good.)

In July 2009 (Wow! That feels so far away!), an eighteen year old guy called James from Kilkenny in Ireland where I ACTUALLY LIVE in ACTUAL LIFE decided to create an online platform for the youth of Kilkenny where they could write about different topics uncensored. It was called PunchTheSphinx. I first found about it in the local newspaper, and applied for authorship. And I got it. PunchTheSphinx organised a cool event called Capture The Flag, posted a few articles, and got on fine until November, when the site was put into hibernation by James, because he had just started college and didn't have the time for the site anymore. Five days later, I started Musings. But that's another story...

Fast-forward to June 2010 (Last month! Wow!), and PunchTheSphinx was BACK, bigger and better! To celebrate there was a huge game of tag rugby all around the city called Zombies, and that was fun! Even though I lost... But still! And there's articles, interviews, reviews, events, and awesomeness! It's not affiliated with any sort of youth organisation, it's all under the PunchTheSphinx banner. You better believe it baby.

If you're from Kilkenny, LOG ON! If you're from Ireland, LOG ON! If you're from the Milky Way, LOG ON!

But I mean, if you don't want to, that's fine. Whatever.

High-Fives,

Eleanor Roscuro

Quote Of The Week #13

My name is Draco Malfoy. I am a racist, I deride gingers, and Mudbloods, I hate Gryffindor house, and my parents worked for the man who killed your parents, do you want to be my friend?

Lauren Lopez as Draco Malfoy - A Very Potter Sequel

Music at Musings - Live Lounge Top 5

Hey there! This is a special Music at Musings, all about BBC's Live Lounge! As you know, I'm a huge fan of the Live Lounge. It's a British radio programme where well-known artists perform one of their songs and one by another artist, acoustically. The songs that are covered are usually from a completely different genre then the artist originates, and offer a new perspective on the songs. I still have many more to see, but out of the ones I've seen so far, this is my Top 5, in no particular order...

(I can't find videos for a lot of my Top 5, so I suppose this is revised, if you know what I mean...)

Marina and the Diamonds - Starstrukk (originally by 3OH!3)

I've featured this on another Music at Musings, but I just love this cover! Marina gives a whole new meaning to the song. I never knew it could be so melancholy and meaningful! 3OH!3 should be ashamed, but I think they're too busy singing about kissing like every other Top 40 artist...

The Noisettes - When You Were Young (originally by The Killers)

I have to say, I don't really like The Noisettes, but I love this cover. It's not mellow, but it's... summery. They made The Killers even summier. Summier?! Oh, just watch it.

Kasabian - The Sweet Escape (originally by Gwen Stefani)

When you put the wackiness of Gwen Stefani with the... awesomeness of Kasabian, you know the result's going to be good. My favourite parts are the last bit (Don't let that money change ya!) and when they sing 'Come on let's bounce,' because I automatically start bouncing. It's fun.

Lady Gaga - Poker Face

OK, I know this isn't really a cover, since it's actually her song, but how could I leave this out? This is epicness in a cool hat.

You Me At Six - Starry Eyed (originally by Ellie Goulding)

Starry Eyed isn't my favourite Ellie Goulding song, but I like it all the same. I will admit I don't know a lot of YM@6's music, but I like this!

I wish I could have put more in, but I think five is a good number.

High-Fives,

Eleanor Roscuro

Cast Your Minds Back...

Remember the... I don't need to ask this. Of course you remember! You do, don't you?

OK. Let's start again.

Yesterday, I posted a Sons Of Admirals video, Here Comes My Baby, on Music at Musings and this post is about one of the band members. Yes, I am talking about the wonderful Alex Day. Comedian, musician, and English guy! But I think there is only one person who can truly introduce us to Nerimon...

He is most famed for his Alex Reads Twilight series, but I don't know which chapter to upload, so I'll give you something from his other series, where he makes fun of British artist's stupid lyrics. This one is quite memorable...

I told you it was memorable.

Like I mentioned above, Alex is also a musician, and has released two albums, Parrot Stories and The World Is Mine (I Don't Know Anything) and an EP all about computer games called 117% Complete. This is one of my favourite music videos of his, The Time Of Your Life, directed by some guy called Charlie. Do you know him?

That makes me laugh so hard... And this is my other favourite, Holding On. Look out for Tom Milsom on glockenspiel! (Glockenspiel. I love saying that word.)

He's also inventor of Trock, or Time Lord Rock, which consists of songs about Doctor Who. I'm not a Who fan myself (I've always wanted to see it, but I think I'm too late...) but his Trock band, Chameleon Circuit, is quite famous among those circles I hear.

High-Fives,

Eleanor Roscuro

Music at Musings - I Blame Coco, All Time Low, Kaiser Chiefs, Sohodolls, Sons of Admirals, Sum 41, Vanessa Carlton

Hello, and welcome to Music at Musings! 'applause and sounds of fainting from audience' Yes, it is me! And look, I have three new followers! That brings me to thirty-two! I've hit the thirties! Hooray! Thanks everybody! Let's roll!

I Blame Coco - Self Machine

The way Coco sings and acts is so ethereal, so graceful... I think I act like that sometimes. At least I try. And the song is really catchy, and I just love it!

All Time Low - Weightless

This is easily one of my favourite songs from Nothing Personal, in the same thread as Sick Little Games. I love the first verse... 'Manage me, I'm a mess, turn a page, I'm a book half unread, I want to be laughed at, laughed with, just because, I want to feel weightless, cause that should be enough...' Awesome.

Kaiser Chiefs - Oh My God

My opinion of Kaiser Chiefs really depends on the songs. Some I like, and some I don't. This is one of the best. Sing-along choruses are so much fun!

Sohodolls - Stripper

It's incredibly sexy (It's called Stripper!) and a brilliant rock song. Sohodolls, who are from London which officially makes them awesome already, say their sound is a cross between 'decaying and desperate glamour' and 'savagery and sex'. There you go. (I think I say awesome too much. Too American.)

Sons of Admirals - Here Comes My Baby

Remember my Charlie McDonnell post two days ago? Of course you do! Well, I forgot to tell you he's in a band, called Sons of Admirals. The name comes from an Elizabethan acting troupe called the Admiral's Men, which were second only to the Chamberlain's Men, Shakespeare's troupe. The Admiral's Men all had jobs and careers outside of acting, but still got together often to put on plays. Sons of Admirals, Charlie McDonnell, Alex Day (I'll have a post up on him soon!), Tom Milsom and Eddplant, all have individual careers outside the band as fantastic YouTube musicians, but have put their talents together and covered Here Comes My Baby by Cat Stevens, and this the result! Personally, I think it's excellent. Watch it to the very end!

Sum 41 - With Me

One of the many things I'd like to be when I grow up leave school is a music supervisor, and choose the soundtracks for movies. I do it all the time in my head. For this song, I would imagine the heroine fleeing an unresolved fight with the one she loves, cutting to her walking through the streets of a carnival, the carnival being oblivious to her pain. Either something like that, or she goes to a Sum 41 concert.

Vanessa Carlton - Nolita Fairytale

Oh God, this song is so good! And when you realise they gave the Bieber kid a record deal, and not dear Vanessa... 'shakes head sadly'

And that's it for Music at Musings today! Stay safe people, and y'all come back now! Or something.

High-Fives,

Eleanor Roscuro

Inspiro-Girls - Leanne Woodfull

Like many others, I first heard of Leanne's blog Thunder + Threads in KISS magazine a few months ago. Since then, it's remained one of my most favourite blogs. Leanne is honest, witty, glamorous, fun, and really nice, really likable. And she knows what she's talking about when it comes to fashion, which is more than I can say for myself! Seriously, her passion is infectious, so come say hi!

*Describe yourself in five words.

creative, daydreamer, emotional, honest and diplomatic.

*Thunder + Threads is fantastic! What's it about and what inspired you to set it up?

Thank you! I started the blog last October, I wanted to have a space where I could share my thoughts and opinions with everyone - and I wanted to write about fashion.
The blog started off as solely a fashion blog, but over the months it has developed into quite a broad blog, I write about anything and everything!

*If you could return to a specific era in history, which would it be?

Certain era's appeal to me. I adore the Tudor, The Victorian and Georgian era's... but ideally, I would of loved to have been born in the 1930s. I would of experienced the best music, film, fashion and superstars there has ever been! Superstars back then were the real deal - they were famous for a talent. I think in the past few decades, we have lost that. Anyone and everyone can become famous these days. I would of also have liked to experienced the fashion - of course! My favourite fashion eras so to speak are the 40s, 50s and late 70s.

*What five songs would be essential to a Leanne Woodfull soundtrack?

Great question! These are a mix of my favourite songs and songs that have a lot of relevance to me. 1. Nobody's Home - Avril Lavigne. 2. Your Guardian Angel - The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. 3. Fences - Paramore. 4. Thunder - Boys Like Girls. 5. Fast Car - Tracy Chapman

*What is your motto for life?

''No Regrets.''

*Who or what makes you jump-in-the-air happy?

Simple things really. My sisters, a genuine, compliment, seeing my family, food, school holidays, passing and doing well in exams, money, achievement and surprises.

*Quick-fire round! Your favourite... Book/Food/Movie/Shop/Website/City/Activity?

Book - The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton or The Outsiders by S.E Hinton
Food - Sushi or Italian
Movie - This took me a while to narrow it down to one but I have to say, Mean Girls!
Website - Twitter probably, all websites seem to piss me off lately though haha!
City - London or Prague, they are both such dreams to be in.
Activity - I love daydreaming and laughing.

*The colour pink, discuss.

Not a favourite of mine - never has been. I wear it frequently, not on purpose though. I much prefer blue, turquoise and gold. I think pink can be tacky but some shades are quite lovely, like rose or reddy-pink.

*What advice would you give to anyone who wants to be a fashion blogger?

To write for yourself, not anyone else. Don't just write something because you think someone else will be interested in it, you have to be too.

Special Blog Announcement! (Wow, I Sound So Authoritive!)

This is a Special Blog Announcement because I was going to post about two other things, even though I can only remember one of them at the moment, but then I got a lovely award, called the Honesty Award, from Macky at A Wallflower's Words. Give her a follow! She said my writing was 'very awesome'! Hooray! I have to answer some questions for the award, honestly of course, so I'll shoot:

Share one thing that nobody knows about you.
Absolutely nobody? OK... When I'm talking to my friends, I end every second sentence with 'Because I'm brilliant!' but I don't really think I am.

What is your biggest regret in life?
My biggest regret in life... At the moment, that is not cleaning my room. I'm in it now, and it makes me sad.

What would you do with a thousand dollars?
I'd get guitar lessons and put the rest towards a new house. I hate Bennettsbridge, I want to live in Kilkenny city, cause that's where it's at, yo dawg! Or something.

If you could go back in time, would you still be with the person you are with right now?
If you mean my imaginary boyfriend, then no.

What do you like or dislike about my (the tagger's) blog page?
There's nothing really to dislike about A Wallflower's Words! I like the new template, and the cool dictionary definitions, and all the creative posts that make a great blog!

I hereby award the Honesty Award to:

~ Leanne Woodfull from Thunder + Threads
~ Grace from Not Another Love Song
~ Jenny from Fiction Isn't Fair
~ Lauri from Lauri Angel
~ Ailish from Hello, I've Missed You Quite Terribly

You've Just Started Reading A Blog Post By Eleanor Roscuro, Which Makes You A Genius!

This might seem strange, but apart from using videos for Music at Musings, and the Potter Puppet Pals (BOTHER!) I've never gone onto YouTube that much. All I seemed to hear about YouTube was those rude Postman Pat videos my brother watches all the time.  Then my friend told me about Charlie McDonnell. Yep, him.

Do you remember? I'm going to marry him! And this guy:

And him:

Yeah, he's handsome. The first video I saw was A Song About Acne, and you can't not love him after watching it. Here, I'll prove it:

I did tell you. It's addictive. He performs other daft songs too, and you can challenge him to do something weird, like paint himself purple or eat baby food. He's even been challenged by Philip Schofield and his daughter. And he's utterly likable, and witty, and quite nerdy, and quite very talented, like I've said. Stephen Fry voices his outros. Stephen Fry, AKA God in tweed.

Alright, I can't resist another. This is one of my favourites, Understanding Teenage Boys! (Don't tell me you've never wondered...)

Oh damn it, I've run out of butter. My skin smells like skin!

WTF? - Randomness

Hello, and welcome to WTF?, the part of the show where I get angry about something.

Today, that thing is RANDOM.

Seriously, I am SICK of people being 'random'. Hang on, let's clarify what random actually means first.

According to dictionary.com, it means:

(adjective) proceeding, made, or occurring without definite aim, reason or pattern

OK, so now we now what the word random really means, but usually when people say the word random they say 'OMG Im soooooooooo random!!!!!!!! lolz!!! ;)' and it makes me really mad, and not just because of the terrible spelling, grammar and punctuation, which also makes me really mad. Those people have made the word random meaningless. For example...

musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings musings

After reading all those musings, the word becomes meaningless and you don't really see it anymore. I know that's what happened to me when I typed them, try it. And apparently being 'random' is cool. How can people be random! You can't! People just say they're random so other people will think they're original, when they're not. It really makes me sick. Ugh!

STOP BEING RANDOM!!!

It's like the formula for being cool. To be 'cool', you must not want to be cool, and you musn't care about what other people think of you. Then, one day, you will wake up, and you will have become cool.

I got that from The Great Big Glorious Book for Girls. But there is no way to be random. It's just not human.

On a lighter note, this is my one-hundredth and forty-ninth post on Musings! This means my next post will be my one-hundredth and fiftieth post. Good to see I haven't totally wasted the last nine months of my life then... Anyway, I asked on Facebook and Twitter for ideas to do something special to celebrate, and since no one replied (grumble) I thought of one on my own. Which will hopefully be published tomorrow. See you then!

High-Fives,

Eleanor Roscuro

The Lion and Albert - Marriott Edgar

There's a famous seaside place called Blackpool,
That's noted for fresh air and fun,
And Mr and Mrs Ramsbottom
Went there with young Albert, their son.

A grand little lad was young Albert,
All dressed in his best; quite a swell
With a stick with an 'orse's 'ead 'andle,
The finest that Woolworth's could sell.

They didn't think much of the Ocean:
The waves, they were fiddlin' and small,
There was no wrecks and nobody drownded,
Fact, nothing to laugh at at all.

So, seeking for further amusement,
They paid and went into the Zoo,
Where they'd Lions and Tigers and Camels,
And old ale and sandwiches too.

There were one great big Lion called Wallace;
His nose were all covered with scars -
He lay in a somnolent posture,
With the side of his face on the bars.

Now Albert had heard about Lions,
How they was ferocious and wild -
To see Wallace lying so peaceful,
Well, it didn't seem right to the child.

So straightway the brave little feller,
Not showing a morsel of fear,
Took his stick with its 'orse's 'ead 'andle
And pushed it in Wallace's ear.

You could see that the Lion didn't like it,
For giving a kind of a roll,
He pulled Albert inside the cage with 'im,
And swallowed the little lad 'ole.

Then Pa, who had seen the occurrence,
And didn't know what to do next,
Said 'Mother! Yon Lion's 'et Albert',
And Mother said 'Well, I am vexed!'

Then Mr and Mrs Ramsbottom -
Quite rightly, when all's said and done -
Complained to the Animal Keeper,
That the Lion had eaten their son.

The keeper was quite nice about it;
He said 'What a nasty mishap.
Are you sure that it's your boy he's eaten?'
Pa said "Am I sure? There's his cap!'

The manager had to be sent for.
He came and he said 'What's to do?'
Pa said 'Yon Lion's 'et Albert,
'And 'im in his Sunday clothes, too.'

Then Mother said, 'Right's right, young feller;
I think it's a shame and a sin,
For a lion to go and eat Albert,
And after we've paid to come in.'

The manager wanted no trouble,
He took out his purse right away,
Saying 'How much to settle the matter?'
And Pa said "What do you usually pay?'

But Mother had turned a bit awkward
When she thought where her Albert had gone.
She said 'No! someone's got to be summonsed' -
So that was decided upon.

Then off they went to the P'lice Station,
In front of the Magistrate chap;
They told 'im what happened to Albert,
And proved it by showing his cap.

The Magistrate gave his opinion
That no one was really to blame
And he said that he hoped the Ramsbottoms
Would have further sons to their name.

At that Mother got proper blazing,
'And thank you, sir, kindly,' said she.
'What waste all our lives raising children
To feed ruddy Lions? Not me!'

RIP Waffle Bear.

Interesting. I think I might do this. Hang on... I am doing nothing on July 24th. Must plan something...

'Orses 'Ead 'Andle

Many comic poems, I find, are not funny at all.
Except for one,
I think it's called 'The Lion and Albert',
And the only reason I find it funny
Is because of the memories it conjures
Up in my head,
Away from Blackpool,
And the fresh air and fun.
I can hear one of my biggest friends
Reading the poem to a group of children
Myself included (Where did you think I got the memory?
From a Pensieve?)
And not having to fake the required accent
As the group of children had to,
Because we are from Kilkenny,
And we talk flat.

And I can smell, hmm,
I can smell fresh paint,
And tobacco.
But this is the only place it smells sweet.
And I see little me,
I remember that day well.
(Actually, I only remember the moments in this place. But I digress.)
That was in Sixth Class I think.
(The beginning of the end, but we'll get to that later.)
And now the poem is over,
And the memory is gone.
But now that I think about it,
Isn't it a little pathetic that I have to read a poem to make myself happy?

And now that I think about it a little bit more,
No.
No, it isn't.
Isn't that what comic poems are for?
But now I've remembered -
They're not funny.

Things I Really Must Do Over The Summer - Revisited #1!

As hard as it is to believe, one third of the summer holidays is over. Horrible, isn't it? A few weeks ago, I wrote a list of what I wanted to do with all my time. Let's have a look!

  • Finish Fresia Well, I've finished the second draft, but there's still things that need to be fixed...
  • Try to go to beach - often Gah! I've only done this once so far, in Portugal. Must go soon! And no, I don't care that I live in the bloody Midlands!
  • Go for picnics in Castle Park Must do this!
  • Go to Holidays premiere That's being held in August.
  • Read 100 books 91 to go...
  • Write list of 100 books to be read 49 to go...
  • Write at least three articles for PTS 2 to go...
  • Don't stay up all night and sleep all day, such a waste. (This blog post is being written at 00:52. I love burning the midnight oil, but it's really difficult because I can't wake the rest of the house, and they can't know I'm up... Why did I have to get the creaky door?) Yes! YES! I ACTUALLY DID NOT DO SOMETHING I WASN'T SUPPOSED TO DO! THIS SUMMER HAS NOT BEEN A FAILURE!
  • Get new clothes. Surprisingly, I did do this.
  • Watch three Audrey Hepburn movies. Ah... not yet.
  • Get new Converse. Yes! Best Converse ever!
  • Dye hair bright red. Ah... But this will happen! It will!
I feel like a failure. Oh well, at least I'm doing OPERATION AWESOME later. I'll tell you about that in a few hours...

Bloggers Do It Better

In the LIFE magazine that came with the Sunday Independent yesterday, I read the Stylewatch column, and it said this:

Stylewatch: The Return of Magazines

Suddenly, we find we're over the whole blogging thing. Let's face it, if these people were actually any good, wouldn't they have a job within the industry, in an actual proper mag? Maybe it's a general growing ennui with the whole online-expression thing, but we find we're returning with gusto to good old magazines. You're not subjected to the petty whinging and the desperate, relentless self-promotion of the online scribes, plus somebody else has whittled out all the rubbish for you. So refreshing.

I mean, I like magazines. I read KISS, Teen Vogue and Official Nintendo Magazine, and enjoy them very much. But they shouldn't be so snobby about blogs, fashion or otherwise! For example, one reason I like blogging is because it gives me the opportunity to practice writing often. I write blog posts here, I write in my diary, I write poetry, I write plays... And I become a little better at it all the time. And I want to keep on doing it for a long time.

And just because someone writes a blog doesn't mean she doesn't have a job in the industry. I know of lots of widely published authors who write blogs in their spare time. And the self-promotion thing? The only people who self-promote their blogs desperately and relentlessly are the ones who have nothing going for themselves, or their blog, and can't rely on word-of-mouth. But networking helps of course.

AND blogs are cheaper than magazines, and better for the environment! *nods smugly*

Inspiro-Girls - Emma Watson

This, ladies and gentlemen, is Emma Watson, one of the greatest actresses of our generation.

I think I'll elaborate a little.

Emma Watson was cast as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise when she was just nine years old, and since then has won over audiences with her charm, poise, elegance, and pure talent. I mean, can you imagine anyone else playing Hermione? NO YOU CAN NOT. She epitomised the role.

And in 2007, she played Pauline Fossil in Ballet Shoes, which is one of my favourite books and movies of all time. The film's director said 'She has a piercing, delicate aura that makes you want to gaze and gaze at her.' Can I say it any better than that? (Answer: No.)

Oh, and if you're still in doubt as to how awesome she is: She models for Burberry. I rest my case.

I'm off now, to make a Beauty Spotlight featuring only this fabulous young woman, and then I will search the Internet to see if Ballet Shoes has been released on DVD.

Oh look, it has!

High-Fives,
